Abraham, one of the most significant figures in the Bible, lived a life full of faith, challenges, and God’s promises. His story, found in the book of Genesis, is foundational to understanding God’s plan for His people. Let’s walk through the major events in Abraham’s life with this timeline.
1. Abram’s Family (Genesis 11:27-32)
Abram, later called Abraham, was born to Terah, who was living in Ur of tehe Chaldeans. Abram was one of three sons, his brothers were Nahor and Haran. Abram married Sarai, but she was barren. After the death of his brother Haran, Abram took care of his nephew Lot.
2. God Calls Abram (Genesis 12:1-3)
Abram was living in Haran when God called him to leave his home and go to a land God would show him. God promised to bless Abram, make him into a great nation, give him a specific land, and bless all families of the earth through him. Abram obeyed and began his journey of faith.
3. Journey to Canaan (Genesis 12:4-9)
Abram, Sarai (later Sarah), and their household traveled to Canaan. Upon arriving, God promised Abram that his descendants would inherit the land. Abram built altars to worship God along the way, marking his faith and gratitude.

4. Abram and Lot Separate (Genesis 13)
To avoid conflict between their growing households, Abram and his nephew Lot decided to separate. Abram allowed Lot to choose first, and Lot settled in the fertile Jordan Valley, near Sodom. Abram remained in Canaan, where God reaffirmed His promise.
5. God’s Covenant with Abram (Genesis 15)
God made a covenant with Abram, promising him countless descendants. Abram believed God’s promise, and it was credited to him as righteousness. God also foretold that Abram’s descendants would face hardship in a foreign land before inheriting Canaan.
6. The Birth of Ishmael (Genesis 16)
When Sarai grew impatient waiting for God’s promise of a son, she gave her servant Hagar to Abram. Hagar bore Ishmael, but this led to tension within the family. God promised to bless Ishmael but made it clear that Abram’s promised heir would come through Sarai.

6. God Renames Abram and Sarai (Genesis 17)
At 99 years old, Abram received a new name—Abraham, meaning “father of many nations.” Sarai was renamed Sarah, meaning “princess”. God also established circumcision as a sign of His covenant with Abraham and his descendants. He promised that Sarah would bear a son, even in her old age.
7. The Birth of Isaac (Genesis 21)
God fulfilled His promise to Abraham and Sarah. Sarah gave birth to Isaac she was 90 years old and when Abraham was 100 years old. Isaac’s birth was a miraculous event, demonstrating God’s power and faithfulness.
8. The Test of Faith (Genesis 22)
In one of the most profound moments of Abraham’s life, God tested his faith by asking him to sacrifice Isaac. Abraham obeyed, but God intervened, providing a ram as a substitute. This event foreshadowed God’s ultimate sacrifice through Jesus Christ.
9. Sarah’s Death and Isaac’s Marriage (Genesis 23-24)
Sarah passed away at 127 years old, and Abraham purchased a burial site in Canaan, solidifying his family’s connection to the Promised Land. Later, Abraham sent his servant to find a wife for Isaac, ensuring the continuation of God’s promise through his lineage.
10. Abraham’s Death (Genesis 25:7-11)
Abraham lived to the age of 175. He was buried next to Sarah in the cave of Machpelah. God’s promises to Abraham continued through Isaac and his descendants, as God’s covenant unfolded through history.
