INSIDE: Discover why teaching kids about the biblical calendar helps them understand the Bible, connect biblical events to modern calendars, and appreciate the timing of God’s feasts and holy days.

Teaching kids about the biblical calendar opens up new layers of understanding and connection to God’s Word. The Bible is a treasure trove of wisdom, history, and spiritual truth if we take the time to dig into it. One fascinating aspect of Scripture is the way it tracks time using the biblical calendar. Here are three key reasons why this knowledge is essential for children.

When children learn about the biblical calendar, they discover a system of timekeeping that is different from our modern Gregorian calendar. The biblical calendar is based on a luni-solar calendar. The lunar calendar tracks with the cycles of the moon, with months beginning at the sighting of the new moon. It is noted in the Bible as the New Moon celebration. To keep the calendar aligned with the solar calendar, a leap month is added few years.

Understanding how time is measured in the Bible helps kids make sense of passages that reference specific days, months, or years. For example, when they read about the Feast of Tabernacles taking place in the seventh month, they can connect this event to the biblical timeline and its significance in God’s redemptive plan. This deeper understanding brings the Bible to life and fosters a greater appreciation for God’s way of measuring time.

Many biblical events are not confined to the past. For example, the Jewish people continue to celebrate biblical feasts, and these occasions often have prophetic significance that points to future events. Teaching kids how to align the biblical calendar with our modern calendar helps them recognize these ongoing connections.

For instance, understanding that Passover typically occurs in March or April on the Gregorian calendar allows children to see its connection to events surrounding the resurrection of Jesus. Similarly, aligning the Feast of Trumpets with September or October can spark meaningful conversations about its potential connection to the return of Christ. This alignment helps kids see how the biblical calendar is relevant to their lives today.

The biblical feasts and holy days are rich with spiritual meaning, and understanding their timing helps kids appreciate their significance. By learning the dates of these events, children can better understand the rhythm of God’s calendar and how it points to His plan of salvation.

For example:

  • Passover reminds us of God’s deliverance of the children of Israel out of Egypt and our deliverance from sin through Jesus.
  • Pentecost celebrates the giving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai and then the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
  • The Feast of Tabernacles invites us to reflect on God’s provision for the children of Isreal as they wandered in the desert. Today we look forward to Jesus’ return when He will dwell among us.

When kids understand when these feasts occur on our calendar, they can participate more fully in family or church celebrations and connect the lessons of the Bible to their everyday lives. This knowledge also helps them develop a sense of anticipation for these appointed times, fostering a deeper connection to God’s Word and His people.

Teaching kids about the biblical calendar is an invaluable way to help them engage with Scripture on a deeper level.
