Bible Timeline Events for January

As we enter the new year, January is a great time to pause and look back at key events on the Bible timeline that happened during this month. Studying biblical history alongside the calendar helps us see God’s plan unfolding over time and reminds us that He is always at work.

The start of a new year is also a perfect opportunity to explore the biblical calendar. As you mark these dates, take time to read the Scripture passages, talk about them as a family or class, and pray for fresh understanding of God’s Word.

January 11 – Tevet 22

Baptism of Jesus
Christians traditionally commemorate the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist on the second Sunday of January. Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River, marking the beginning of His public ministry. This moment revealed Jesus as the Son of God, with the Spirit descending like a dove and the Father’s voice from heaven. The baptism reminds us of repentance, obedience, and God’s clear affirmation of who Jesus is.

January 17 – Tevet 28

Simeon
Jewish tradition recognizes this date as the birthday of Simeon, the second son born to Leah and Jacob. Simeon was one of the twelve sons of Jacob who became the twelve tribes of Israel. His life is part of the early family history that shaped the nation God would later use to bless the world.

January 19 – Shevat 1

New Moon / New Month
The month of Shevat begins at sunset. In the Bible, new months were marked by the new moon and signaled fresh beginnings. Shevat (pronounced shuh-VAT) is traditionally connected with growth and preparation, making it a meaningful time to reflect on spiritual growth and faithfulness.
