Moses: Big Faith in Hard Times

Moses: Big Faith in Hard Times

Faith rarely grows when life is easy. In the Bible, we often see faith grow in the middle of uncertainty, pressure, and uncomfortable obedience. One of the clearest examples is Moses.

Moses’ story shows that faith is not built in a single moment. It grows over time as we trust God again and again—especially when the path forward feels difficult. With each step of faith forward we grow stronger.

For parents and teachers helping kids understand faith, Moses provides powerful examples of trusting God in hard moments.

Let’s look at a few key times in Moses’ life when faith required courage and obedience.

1. Moses Chose Obedience at the Burning Bush

When God spoke to Moses through the burning bush, Moses was not eager to lead Israel. In fact, he tried several times to explain why he was the wrong person for the job.

He felt unqualified.
He felt unsure of himself.
He feared how people would respond.

Yet God did not ask Moses to feel comfortable with this assignment. He asked Moses to trust Him.

Eventually Moses obeyed and returned to Egypt, the very place he had fled years earlier.

Faith Lesson:
Sometimes faith means stepping into something that feels uncomfortable or even frightening. Moses moved forward not because he felt ready, but because God asked him to obey and promised to be with him.

Outcome: God began the process of delivering Israel from slavery.

2. Moses Stood Firm Before Pharaoh

Moses had to repeatedly confront Pharaoh and demand that the children of Israel be set free. This was not a one-time act of bravery, it was ongoing obedience, and it was hard.

Pharaoh refused again and again.
The situation looked impossible.
The pressure must have been intense both from Pharaoh and the Israelites.

Still, Moses continued to do exactly what God instructed, time after time.

Faith Lesson:
Faith often requires persistence. Even when we don't see immediate results, obedience still matters.

Outcome: Through the plagues, God demonstrated His power and protection as He moved Israel closer to freedom.

3. Moses Trusted God at the Red Sea

One of the most dramatic moments in Moses’ life happened when the Israelites were trapped between Pharaoh’s army and the Sea.

The people panicked.
Fear spread quickly.
There seemed to be no way forward.

But the Lord had been building Moses' faith so that he was strong enough to tell the people to stand firm and watch what God would do.

God then instructed Moses to stretch out his staff over the sea.

When Moses obeyed, God parted the Sea and the children of Israel walked through on dry ground.

Faith Lesson:
Faith sometimes means taking action before we can see how God will solve the problem.

Outcome: God provided miraculous protection and deliverance through the sea.

4. Moses Followed God Through the Wilderness

After leaving Egypt, Moses led the Israelites through years of wandering in the wilderness.

This season required constant faith.

There were complaints from the people.
There were shortages of food and water.
There were moments when leadership felt overwhelming.

Yet again and again, Moses turned to God for guidance. He had learned the pattern that worked for him: problem, pray, wait on an answer from the Lord, and then move on that answer.

Faith Lesson:
Faith is not only for dramatic moments. Often it is built through daily dependence on God.

Outcome: God provided manna, water, protection, and direction for His people.

What Moses Teaches Us About Faith

Moses’ story reminds us that faith grows step by step and day by day.

He did not start as a fearless leader. Instead, his faith deepened as he obeyed God in difficult situations and the mundane decisions of day to day life.

Each time Moses trusted God:

  • God provided deliverance

  • God gave protection

  • God brought freedom

For families and teachers, Moses’ story is a powerful way to show children that faith is not about having all the answers. Faith is choosing to trust and obey God, even when the path forward feels uncertain.

And often, it is in the hardest moments that God builds the strongest faith.
