Ruth’s story is one of the clearest pictures in the Bible of what real faith looks like in action. She wasn’t born into Israel. She didn’t grow up knowing the one true God. Yet her life shows how faith begins, grows, and leads to lasting impact.
A Gentile Woman with a Choice
Ruth was a Moabite, meaning she came from a nation that did not follow the God of Israel. She married into an Israelite family who had moved to Moab during a famine. But tragedy struck, her husband died, along with his brother and father. That left Ruth, her sister-in-law Orpah, and her mother-in-law Naomi alone.
At this point, Ruth had a choice. She could return to her old life, her old beliefs, and her people.
Instead, she chose something different.
Choosing the One True God
Ruth made a bold declaration of faith. She told Naomi she would not leave her:
“Your people will be my people and your God my God.”
This wasn’t just loyalty to Naomi, it was a turning point. Ruth chose to leave behind her past and become a believer in the one true God.

Staying Connected to a Believing Family

Ruth followed Naomi back to Bethlehem, leaving her homeland behind. This meant new customs, new people, and a completely different life.
When they arrived, Ruth stepped in to provide for them by gleaning in the fields. This included the difficult work of picking up leftover grain after the harvesters. This was hard, humble work, but she did it faithfully.
That’s where God began to work in ways she couldn’t have seen.

Ruth “happened” to glean in the field of Boaz, a relative of Naomi’s husband. But this wasn’t just luck, it was God’s provision.
Boaz noticed Ruth’s character, her kindness, her faithfulness, and her commitment to Naomi. He showed her favor and eventually became her kinsman-redeemer, marrying her and restoring her family inheritance.
