The 50-Day Countdown: From Passover to Pentecost

The 50-Day Countdown: From Passover to Pentecost

The days between Passover and Pentecost are some of the most meaningful in all of Scripture.

It begins with the resurrection of Jesus—our greatest reason for hope. After rising from the dead, Jesus didn’t immediately ascend into heaven. Instead, He spent 40 days appearing to His disciples, His friends, and even large groups of people, proving that He was alive.

Then came the moment of His ascension—Jesus returning to heaven.

But the story doesn’t stop there.

God had already established a pattern for this season long before, in Leviticus. His people were instructed to count the days from Passover to Pentecost. Today, this is often called the “counting of the Omer.”

This wasn’t just about marking time—it was about remembering.

Passover celebrates God’s deliverance of His people from slavery in Egypt. Pentecost points back to another powerful moment: the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai. It was there that God showed His people how to live as those who had been set free.

Now, as believers, we see even more.

Because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, we celebrate freedom from bondage to sin. And at Pentecost, we remember the giving of the Holy Spirit—God’s presence dwelling within us.

These 50 days remind us that redemption is not the end of the story—it’s the beginning.

When God brought His people out of Egypt, He didn’t leave them there. They walked through the sea on dry ground, traveled through the wilderness, and were given a new way to live—a life that honored Him.

In the same way, our journey doesn’t end at salvation.

These days between Passover and Pentecost invite us to pause and grow.

  • To remember what God has done
  • To give thanks for our redemption
  • To turn away from sin and walk in obedience
  • To build new habits that reflect a life changed by Him

Scripture tells us that God writes His law on our hearts. That means He is still shaping us, still growing us, still calling us forward.

So here’s a simple question to consider during this season:

What is God inviting you to grow in right now?

The disciples didn’t step into fulfilling the great commission until after the Holy Spirit came. Their work was just beginning.

And the same is true for us.

God’s calendar gives us these moments each year to remember His faithfulness—but also to refocus on the work He has for us today.

So don’t let these 50 days pass by unnoticed.

Use them well.

Grow deeper. Walk closer. Be ready.
