Who Was Joseph in the Bible?

Who Was Joseph in the Bible?

Joseph is one of the most well-known men in the Bible. His story is filled with dreams, betrayal, forgiveness, and most of all, God's faithfulness. Joseph went from being sold as a slave by his own brothers to becoming the second most powerful ruler in Egypt. His life reminds us that God can work through even the hardest circumstances for His good purposes.

If you're studying the book of Genesis with your family, homeschool, Sunday School, or Christian school, Joseph's life is an excellent place to begin.

Who Was Joseph?

Joseph was the eleventh son of Jacob and the first son born to Rachel, Jacob's beloved wife. He also had one full brother, Benjamin, and ten older half-brothers.

The name Joseph means "He increases."

Joseph later married Asenath, and together they had two sons:

  • Manasseh
  • Ephraim

Where Is Joseph's Story Found in the Bible?

Joseph's story is found in Genesis 37–50, making it one of the longest continuous accounts of a single person in the book of Genesis.

You'll also find Joseph mentioned in Joshua 24:32, where his burial is recorded.

What Is Joseph Known For?

Joseph is remembered for several important events in the Bible:

  • Being Jacob's favorite son
  • Having prophetic dreams from God
  • Being sold into slavery by his jealous brothers
  • Remaining faithful to God even while living as a slave and prisoner
  • Interpreting dreams through a gifting of the Lord
  • Becoming second in command over all of Egypt
  • Saving Egypt and his own family during seven years of famine
  • Choosing forgiveness instead of revenge

Joseph's life is a powerful example of trusting God through difficult circumstances.

Why Did Joseph's Brothers Sell Him?

Joseph's brothers became jealous because:

  • Jacob loved Joseph more than his other sons.
  • Joseph received a special coat from his father who was showing him favor.
  • Joseph shared dreams that showed his family bowing down to him.

Instead of celebrating God's plan, his brothers sold him to traveling merchants who took him to Egypt and then sold him as a slave.

Although this seemed like the end of Joseph's story, God was preparing him for something much greater.

How Did Joseph Become a Leader in Egypt?

First in slavery and then in prison, Joseph faithfully served God.

God gave Joseph the ability to interpret dreams, including Pharaoh's troubling dreams about seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine.

Because of Joseph's wisdom, Pharaoh placed him in charge of preparing Egypt for the coming famine. Joseph became the second most powerful man in Egypt, overseeing the storage and distribution of food.

Years later, when the famine spread into Canaan, Joseph's brothers came to Egypt seeking grain—just as Joseph's dreams had foretold.

Did Joseph Forgive His Brothers?

Yes.

After revealing his identity, Joseph chose forgiveness instead of revenge.

One of the most encouraging verses in Joseph's story is Genesis 50:20:

"You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good."

Joseph recognized that although his brothers had made sinful choices, God had been working through every circumstance to preserve their lives and the lives of the people of Egypt.

His forgiveness points us toward God's mercy and His greater plan of redemption.

Where Did Joseph Live?

During his lifetime Joseph lived in:

  • The land of Canaan
  • Egypt

Although he spent many years in Egypt, Joseph never forgot God's promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

How Long Did Joseph Live?

Joseph lived to be 110 years old.

Before he died, he instructed his family to carry his bones back to the Promised Land when God delivered them from Egypt.

His request was fulfilled many years later by Moses. His bones left Egypt with the Hebrews and they buried him in Shechem.
