After Jesus rose from the dead, He didn’t just disappear. He showed up—to individuals, small groups, and even a large crowd. The resurrection wasn’t a secret; it was confirmed by many different people in many different places.
Let’s take a quick journey through Scripture and see who actually witnessed the risen Jesus.
The Guards at the Tomb
Matthew 28:11–15
These Roman guards saw something supernatural and ran to tell the religious leaders. Instead of sharing the truth, they were paid to keep quiet. They didn’t deny what happened—they just didn’t tell the whole story.
Mary Magdalene
John 20:11–18
She was the first to see Jesus alive. At first, she didn’t recognize Him, but when He called her by name, she knew it was her Lord. What an incredible moment at the tomb in Jerusalem!
Mary (mother of James) and Salome
Mark 16:1–8
These women came to anoint Jesus’ body with spices and found the tomb empty. An angel told them Jesus had risen, and they were filled with fear and amazement.
Two Disciples on the Road to Emmaus
Luke 24:13–35
Jesus walked with them, talked with them, and explained the Scriptures—but they didn’t realize who He was until He broke bread with them. Then their eyes were opened and they knew He was Jesus.
Ten Disciples (minus Thomas)
Luke 24:36–43; John 20:24–25
Jesus appeared to them in Jerusalem, proving He was alive by showing His hands and feet—and even eating with them.
Eleven Disciples (including Thomas)
John 20:26–29
Thomas had his doubts, but when Jesus invited him to touch His wounds, Thomas believed. Jesus reminded us: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Seven Disciples Fishing
John 21:1–14
Jesus met some of His Disciples at the Sea of Galilee after a long night of fishing. He gave them a miraculous catch and even cooked breakfast for them.
Peter’s One-on-One with Jesus
John 21:15–17
After breakfast, Jesus had a personal conversation with Peter—restoring him and giving him the mission of: “Feed my sheep.”
Eleven Disciples on a Mountain
Matthew 28:16–20
In Galilee, Jesus gave the Great Commission—sending His Disciples to teach all nations and make more disciples. The Disciples obeyed that command throughout their lifetime.
500 Believers
1 Corinthians 15:6
Jesus appeared to more than 500 people at once. This wasn’t a dream or a vision—it was a real appearance witnessed by a crowd of people.
James, the Brother of Jesus
1 Corinthians 15:7
Even Jesus’ own brother, who hadn’t believed before, saw the risen Christ. That moment changed everything for James. He followed Jesus the rest of his life.
Final Instructions in Jerusalem
Acts 1:2–8
Before ascending into heaven, Jesus gathered His disciples one last time to remind them to wait for the Holy Spirit and to be His witnesses not only in Judea and Samaria, but eventually to the ends of the earth. And they obeyed.
Saul (Paul) on the Road to Damascus
Acts 9:1–5
After the resurrection and ascension, Jesus appeared to Saul in a blinding light. That encounter turned a fierce persecutor of believers into a bold missionary to the Gentiles.
Why It Matters
So many people in so many places saw Jesus alive after the crucifixion. These weren’t quick glances—they talked with Him, walked with Him, ate with Him, and touched Him.
The resurrection wasn’t just one person’s experience—it was a reality witnessed by hundreds.
This powerful truth is the foundation of our faith. Jesus conquered death—and we can trust Him with our lives, now and forever.
