What is Scripture Writing?

Written by Dianna Wiebe on .

You might be asking what is scripture writing? Why write scripture? What are examples and where do I start with Scripture Writing?

Scripture writing is a spiritual practice that involves the intentional copying verses or passages from the Bible by hand. It goes one step beyond simply reading or studying the Bible; it helps you to slow down and consider every word, allowing you to engage with the Word of God in a unique way.

Why Write Scripture?

Writing out Bible verses or passages serves several purposes. Firstly, it promotes a deeper understanding of the text. When you write out the words of the Bible, you are forced to slow down and pay close attention to each word, phrase, and verse. This can lead to insights and revelations you might not get through just reading. Secondly, it helps with memorization. The act of writing helps embed the Word of God in your memory, making it easier to recall and apply in your daily life. Finally, writing the Bible can be a form of worship. It gives you time to connect with God’s Word on a personal level resulting in spiritual growth.

Examples of Scripture Writing

Examples of people writing in the Bible can be found in various forms. For instance, in Jeremiah 36, the prophet Jeremiah dictated God’s words to his scribe Baruch, who wrote the words on a scroll. This scroll was read aloud to King Jehoiakim, who then cut it into pieces and burned it. Despite the destruction of the scroll, it was rewritten, highlighting the importance of preserving and rewriting God’s words. Additionally, in the New Testament, the apostle Paul often wrote letters to the early Christian communities, which are now a significant part of the New Testament canon. These letters, like the Epistles to the Corinthians or Romans, serve as examples from the first century. These examples illustrate the various ways scripture writing has played a crucial role in preserving and transmitting God’s message throughout biblical history.

Where Do I Start Writing Scripture?

If you’re new to scripture writing, a good place to start is by selecting a specific book or passage from the Bible that you want to study or memorize. Begin by writing out verses or chapters by hand in a journal or on paper. There are also scripture writing plans available that guide you in handwriting specific passages each day. These plans often focus on a particular theme, such as Christmas, or topic and can be a helpful way to get started.
